Day for Night Grading

Day for Night is a technique use in film making where it would be impossible or impractical to shoot a scene at night.
So it is filmed during the day and colour graded in post to make it look like it was filmed at night.

The colourist challenge is to not just darken the image but enhance and add the elements that would be there in a night scene.

The dark tones should be dropped and the highlights desaturated.
Windows and lights are a way to make it appear night, they must be masked and brightened to appear as they are lit up.

In this example above.

Shot on Arri Alexa LogC ProRes444.
Graded on Davinci Resolve v11.
Colorist Drew McPherson.
